A group of students from Ysgol Penweddig, Aberystwyth have come top in the final of the UK Young Enterprise Awards in Scilly. The group managed to win the ‘Company of the Year 2024’ category after finding success here in Wales earlier in the year.
Their success comes following their work on a project named ‘Sbarion’, a recipe book that advises cooks how to use leftovers in order to prevent waste. There are around 40 recipes in the book, that emphasises the principle that there is no need to always buy new ingredients in order to produce nutritious meals. The book shows that it is often possible to prepare quality meals using that which is left over from previous meals, as well as those ingredients that tend to hide at the back of the cupboard.
The aim of the competition, which is run by Young Enterprise, is to encourage entrepreneurial thinking in the young and give them practical experience of developing and honing their ideas and their business skills. As part of the scheme, students are encouraged to put their ideas to work, be they a service or a product an develop a clear business plan for the judges to assess. As part of the process the pupils of Penweddig set up their own company called Llanw for the competition and went ahead with their plans to realise their vision.
