The Welsh Language Commissioner has launched the ‘Defnyddia Dy Gymraeg’ (Use Your Welsh) initiative as a means of encouraging people to use the language in their day to day lives. The Commissioner is eager to see an increase in the use of Welsh across different contexts and situations, be it in the workplace, in school or as part of social life. The aim of the initiative is to encourage people to use the Welsh they have, whether they are fluent or not in order to establish the Welsh language as a natural part of their day to day lives.
Since taking the position earlier in the year, encouraging the use of Welsh has been a priority for Efa Gruffydd Jones. In a statement she said:
‘In order for a language to live and survive, it needs to be used in every aspect of society. Over the past twelve months I have had the opportunity to visit various institutions; businesses, schools, community centres and even prisons.
‘It was nice to hear Welsh being spoken naturally in these places and people taking pride in the language.’
As part of the campaign several short films have been produced showing use of Welsh in different contexts with various public bodies encouraged to spread the message by using the #DefnyddiaDyGymraeg hashtag. The campaign will run from 27 November until 11 December 2023. You can find more information about the campaign on the Welsh Language Commissioner’s website.
