The Welsh Government has sought to take action to address the issue of river pollution in Wales when it announced a £40 million investment over the next three years aimed at combating river pollution. This funding will be allocated towards improving water quality, reducing pollution from agriculture, and assisting farmers in adopting sustainable practices. There was also up to £10 million committed to directly support on-farm infrastructure investment to enhance nutrient management and help farmers reach compliance with the Control of Agricultural Pollution Regulations.
A package of support for farmers, foresters, land managers, and food businesses worth over £227 million over the next three years will be implemented to support the resilience of the rural economy, including supporting actions to tackle agricultural pollution.
To regulate agricultural pollution effectively, the Welsh Government introduced regulations that will require farmers to adopt land management practices that minimise the risk of pollution.
