AI adoption across Welsh SMEs remains modest, but the tools are becoming more accessible and with it, the opportunities are growing. Whether it’s a builder using predictive scheduling, a food producer automating inventory tracking, or a rural café streamlining social media content using generative AI, small steps are making a real difference.
Senedd Research (2025) highlights that production, construction and business services are leading AI adopters in Wales, while many rural businesses still face barriers: poor connectivity, low awareness, limited digital confidence, and lack of Welsh-language compatibility in some tools.
Yet off-the-shelf tools are now easier to use than ever. As the Welsh Government notes, departments are already using generative AI to accelerate report-writing and web updates. That same technology is increasingly accessible to rural entrepreneurs.
