Welsh councils have said there is a timely opportunity to build on shared ambitions for rural Wales and work with the new Welsh Government administration on practical, innovative solutions that help communities thrive, as Leaders formally introduced the WLGA’s Rural Manifesto to the Cabinet Minister for Local Government, Housing and Planning on the Royal Welsh showground in Llanelwedd.
Councils have said that the Welsh Government’s focus on rural communities, local government, housing and planning, connectivity, regeneration, agriculture, food production, climate resilience and the Welsh language provides important common ground for action. They also stressed that rural Wales should be a cross-government responsibility, with every portfolio having a stake in the future of rural communities.
Leaders reiterated their commitment to work with the Welsh Government around the Rural Manifesto and its key asks for rural communities.
The Manifesto sets out a positive agenda for action, including a comprehensive Rural Development Plan for Wales, fair and sustainable funding for rural services, stronger rural proofing of national policy, and investment in local economies, transport, skills, digital connectivity, Welsh language communities and community resilience.
