Newport community group successful in bid to buy chapel

September 2024 | Featured, Rural policy

A community group from Newport in Pembrokeshire has been successful in their bid to buy Bethlehem Baptist Chapel with the aim of turning it into a community center. Through collaboration with Planed Cymru, a charity that helps communities in west Wales to develop and innovate, along with private lenders, Bethlehem Community Group succeeded in buying the chapel at auction on 30 August.

The group is keen to turn the Grade II listed building into an inclusive heritage center, in order to document and celebrate the history and culture of Newport for years to come. They believe strongly in the need for the Welsh language to be at the heart of the project and are keen for the center to be one that innovates, promotes, and supports the local community.
