Analysis from Pragmatix Advisory for The Rural Coalition highlights how rural England has been underperforming for decades and how targeted governance, fair funding and locally led solutions could unlock billions in additional productivity and tax receipts.
Although the findings focus on England, the underlying issues will feel familiar in rural Wales: ageing populations, higher delivery costs, limited transport, digital gaps, fewer training options and housing pressures that drive young people away from the very places that need them most.
The report’s core message is that these challenges are structural, not inevitable and countries that get things such a rural governance right, including Scandinavian nations, see far stronger rural–urban balance and much higher productivity.
Can Wales take anything from this evidence to strengthen our own rural policy, funding frameworks and community-led approaches? This is particularly relevant as Wales looks at the future of transport, digital investment, green jobs, health access and the role of locally empowered communities in shaping solutions.
