Bangor University researchers to launch bilingual workforce toolkit

Researchers from Bangor University have announced that they will be launching a new innovative resource to help bilingual workforces. The package will be launched at a special conference targeted at employers that want to employ bilingual staff.

The ‘Bilingual Workforce Recruitment Pack’ follows funding provided through the ARFOR Cronfa Her programme. The aim of the toolkit is to support institutions to recruit staff that have Welsh language skills. It contains a ‘Good Practice Toolkit’ which offers practical advice to employers, along with a ‘Typology of Welsh Speakers’ Migration Decisions’ based on Elen Bonner’s work, which helps employers identify target audiences when recruiting staff that can speak Welsh.

Dr Cynog Prys, Senior Lecturer in Sociology and Social Policy at Bangor University, and project lead said:

‘Our research shows that recruiting staff with Welsh language skills can be a real challenge for some employers. In response to this, we have created a practical resource for employers which will help them recruit employees with the necessary language skills to undertake their roles. This includes 10 “good practices” that employers can consider when recruiting and a unique typology to help employers tailor messages when targeting specific groups. We look forward to sharing these resources as part of the event.’

During the day, there will be panel discussions including employers and young people sharing their recruitment experiences and contributors from Wales and the Basque Country will discuss their expertise in the field of language planning.

The free event will be held between 9:30am and 3:30pm on 29 November 2024 in Reichel Hall, Bangor University. For further details and to book a ticket follow this link. You need to register for this event by 22 November 2024 to ensure your place.
